Diamond Coating Technology

Diamond-coated mechanical seal faces greatly outperform other materials in terms of friction, heat generation and dissipation, power absorption and tolerance to dry-running.

While not made for continuous dry running in most applications, diamond coating for mechanical seals faces completely eliminate the threat of seal damage for occasional short-term lack of seal lubrication. Their tribological properties guarantee remarkable power savings, with big economic and environmental improvements on all industrial operations. Such savings usually reach over 50% of the total mechanical seal energy consumption.

While the diamond coating for mechanical seals is rapidly gaining confidence among users worldwide, not all coatings are alike. A few examples of the several available types of coatings include:

Standard coating

A 8µm-thick layer of CVD diamond provides the optimal solution for costs optimization. Standard diamond can be paired with other materials to provide extremely low friction coefficients at very reasonable prices.

Heavy Duty coating

16µm or 24µm layer of polycrystalline diamond, extremely suitable for low viscosity slurries that would usually provide an insufficient lubrication to the mechanical seal without large quantities of expensive flushing. Excellent for the paper and mining sector, or any application involving abrasive and dense slurries.

Soft coating

Smoother surface, providing a superior seal face flatness. This coating greatly reduces the seal’s friction coefficient when operating with high viscosity fluids, such as hot water or flashing hydrocarbons, which would cause unacceptable leakage with other types of diamond.

Amorphous coating

While other coatings always require a silicon carbide face as base, this technology can be applied on tungsten carbide, when its mechanical resistance is needed for crystallizing or polymerizing fluids applications.
